Celebrated for his tour-de-force “Dallas Buyers Club,” which one three Academy Awards, this director from Montreal has been making waves since his first feature, the erotic thriller “Black List,” became the highest-grossing film in Quebec that year. Admittedly from school of “less is more,” Jean-Marc approaches a film as capturing reality, not recreating it, sometimes using only natural light and foregoing blocking. The result is a body of work -- from beguiling coming-of-age tales, epic love stories and costume dramas -- that always keep his colorful characters and storytelling front-and-center.
