Don't Forget Your Helmet: Bikes and Ads

December 18, 2020

For anyone who prefers not to drive, Bicycles may be a lifeline. That’s why, whether the ad is for a bicycle or not, an advertisement that features a bike will definitely drive a certain audience. It can instantly capture the attention of some people they wouldn’t normally right away, and potentially persuade them to purchase whatever item is being sold. Sometimes these ads featuring bikes can be exhilarating, or humorous, or other times just downright absurd. From least entertaining to most, here are the top ten best ads featuring bicycles.

Beautifully shot, this Stromer ad showcases that you don’t have to own a car in order to get around in style. The ad for the state of the art bicycle depicts a young professional man getting ready to go to work. It seems like he’s going to grab car keys on his kitchen table, but instead he grabs his phone to enable his electric bike. The ad simultaneously presents all of the bike’s features while still delivering engaging visuals.

This energetic ad for Deliveroo, the online food delivery company, is directed by Cedric Dubourg and produced by Left Productions. The ad showcases a flashy portrayal of food delivery people getting to the correct location as efficiently as possible via bicycles. It is psychedelic at times, with different colored smoke frequently appearing, as well as a lot of superimposed imagery popping up on screen. The ad makes Deliveroo look professional but also enables the viewer to feel excitement while watching. As well as depicting how good Deliveroo is at what they do, it also shows how riding a bike is always a sure way to get to where you need to be.

This fun ad for the E bike plays with action movie tropes in order to enhance the effectiveness of the product that is being sold. The ad starts out depicting a well dressed man determined to get to where he wants to go as fast as he can, using the E bike. It almost seems superhuman the way he zooms across town, and that's because the bike can be whatever the customer wants it to be. In the second half of the ad, a young woman is seen riding the bike, but her approach is much more relaxed and calm. This ad brilliantly showcases that the product can be used in a variety of different ways, and can work for a bicyclist who either uses a bike to efficiently get to where they need to be, or for a person who uses a car for transportation and rides a bike for pleasure or exercise.

Bike for Brussels

Produced by the production company Beyond, this Bike for Brussels ad is all about the dangers

of being a bicyclist in Brussels. While most of the ads on this list show bikes in a fun light, this ad is more focused on public safety. In the advertisement, it is stated that only 24 percent of bikers ride at night without lights on. Because of this fact, the people over at Bike for Brussels created an interactive bike lane that depicts cartoon video featuring animated avatars of the bikers themselves getting into an accident because of a lack of lights at night. This ad is educational by showing how important it is to be safe and seen by others while riding a bike, especially at night, all while being an entertaining watch.

BikeID

Bikeid’s beautifully shot ad is directed by Brennan Staisewicz and features some gorgeous visuals as well as an upbeat soundtrack. On top of all that, the product at hand, a professionally-crafted, super stylish bicycle, appears to be top-notch. The ad features several people, including businessmen and a classy woman choosing to ride a bicycle rather than a car. The ad makes the audience feel the wind through the air vicariously through the actors in the commercial as they happily ride off on their fancy bike.

VanMoof

This inventive ad for VanMoof electric bikes shows the downside of cars in order to promote their product, and was banned in France for it. The ad opens with a car, but in the car’s reflection, we can see pollution. Soon, images appear that showcase all of the downsides to having a car, like traffic and accidents, and then we are shown the car melting away and the electric bike appears. Equipped with some great special effects, this effective ad makes a great argument for why biking is a great alternative to driving, even if it did prove to be very controversial.

Barclaycard

This Barclaycard ad directed by Phillip Clyde-Smith is narratively driven and very heartfelt. The ad depicts a woman who wants to compete in a bicycle race, but her bike breaks while practicing. She wants to get a new bike right away but it is too expensive. Eventually, her boyfriend buys her a new bike to compete with, using his Barclaycard credit card. The advertisement is well shot and also has very striking bright lighting. It is an engaging watch, but also shows the viewer how handy a Barclaycard really can be sometimes.

Nikon

Directed by Simon Lane, this Nikon ad shows a business owner partaking in many of his own passions. The ad successfully captures a person thriving while still effectively advertising cameras. The ad features a man who owns a business where he personally creates bicycles by hand. He also uses a Nikon camera to photograph his work. The ad moves slowly with a crisp color palette, creating a very relaxing atmosphere. Including a theme of bicycles in an ad for cameras is a smart way to boost sales because that way, Nikon is opening up their audience to athletic people who begin to ponder the thought of bringing photography into their sport after viewing the ad.

Dueruote

Directed by Tango and Cash, this Dueruote ad features the creator of Dueruote bikes explaining the difference between his bikes and others while he rides one of his bicycles through a gorgeous city. Throughout the ad, there are close-up glimpses of the Dueruote bike, perfectly showcasing the item for potential buyers. Simultaneously during these shots, the narrator explains why bikes are his passion. While an effective advertisement, this can also serve as an inspirational video for aspiring business owners.

Specialized

This powerful ad for Specialized bicycles is directed by Harrison Boyce and the agency is In-House, as well as the production company. This ad contains the message that anyone can do anything they put their mind to, regardless of that person’s color and gender. The ad features a female cyclist who, with a black cyclist, discusses how difficult it is to be involved in a sport that naturally suppresses who you are. The audience gets to see these people succeed while hearing their stories, and it’s nothing short of empowering.
